The Large-area LCD TV Panel Shipments Continue to Feel the Breeze from Healthy LCD TV Demand in 4Q 2014: MIC
November 14, 2014

Taiwan's large-area LCD panel shipment in the third quarter grew 0.7% sequentially, mainly owing to the increased demand for LCD TVs towards year-end, according to Brian Chen, the industry analyst with MIC (Market Intelligence and Consulting Institute), a Taipei-based ICT research institute. "The pull-in demand in anticipation of China's October long holiday and year-end sales seasons in Europe and North America were the major growth drivers in the third quarter," said Chen. "In the fourth quarter of 2014, the continued healthy demand for LCD TV panels coupled with modest demand for notebook PC panels is playing a key factor to slow Taiwan's large-area LCD panel shipment decline in the fourth quarter of 2014" Chen added.

LCD TV Panels

Looking at large-area LCD panel shipments for LCD TVs, as the sales of LCD TVs in October long holiday fell short of expectations, LCD TV brands depend highly on the sales from China's Singles Day and Christmas holiday in Europe and North America. Additionally, brands have begun to replenish inventories in October and November with fears of supply constraint lurking in the mind, a situation that often occurs in the fourth quarter of every year. Hence, Taiwan's LCD panel shipments are likely to stay promising in the fourth quarter of 2014. As for the shipment share by panel size in the third quarter of 2014, Taiwan's 18.5" LCD TV panel shipments dipped 85% sequentially while 40" models have succeeded in replacing 39" ones. In addition to 40" LCD TV panels, Innolux has also promoted efforts to increase shipments for 58" ones. With more placing focus on 65" LCD TV panels, Taiwan's shipments for 65" models increased 22.7% sequentially in the third quarter of 2014.

Notebook PC Panels

As with large-area LCD panels for use in notebook PCs, Taiwanese makers' shipments for notebook PC panels witnessed growth in the third quarter of 2014. "The growth was mainly attributed to notebook PC brands' advanced pull-in demand for notebook PC panels in the third quarter. However, as Korean and Chinese makers have been strategically increasing their large-area LCD panel shipments, the growth momentum in notebook PC panel ASP (Average Selling Price) will soften in the fourth quarter of 2014.
