Taiwan's Ministry of Science and Technology announced that a research team led by Lu Haihan, a professor of National Taipei University of Technology, had made breakthroughs in transmission speed and distance of the visible light communication technology to reach 10 Gbps over 17.5 meters, reported China Times on April 17. The system, which transfers data using red laser beams through air, instead of fiber, can reduce the electromagnetic wave interference and hence suitable for in-door applications or installation at hospitals and on air planes. This technology has been partially transferred to companies and is slated for commercialization in 2015, with an estimated market value of hundreds of millions of NT dollars.
