E Ink Signs FFS Licensing Agreement with BOE
April 02, 2014

E Ink announced a patent licensing contract between its subsidiary Hydis and China's BOE group on April 1, according to the Commercial Times. The deal allows cross licensing of TFT-LCD (Thin Film Transistor Liquid Crystal Display) patents owned by both companies, with FFS (Fringe Field Switching) wide viewing angle technology included. Hydis' FFS technology provides advantages such as energy efficiency, high contrast, and high resolution, which is suitable for high-end mobile devices like smartphones and tablets. In the past few years, E Ink has licensed this technology to panel makers in Taiwan, Japan, and Korea such as LGD, Sharp, Chunghwa Picture Tubes, AUO, INNOLUX. Due to confidential concern, the financial term of this transaction is yet disclosed.
