December 30, 2013

China-based panel maker BOE announced that its 8.5G oxide TFT-LCD (Thin Film Transistor Liquid Crystal Display) line – the first in China - has begun mass production in Hefei, as a prelude to its entrance into the high-end and AMOLED (Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode) display markets, reported Taiwan's Commercial Times on December 30. The production line, which costs around 28.5 billion RMB (US$4.7 billion; US$1=6.0648 RMB), has a monthly capacity of 90,000 glass substrates, of which 2,000 units will be used for AMOLED displays. A total of three 8.5G lines will be put into operation in China in 2014. It is expected that the overall capacity of China's 8G and 8.5G lines, estimated to reach a total number of 12 as planned, will surge over 260% by 2015, according to the report.
