December 23, 2013

BlackBerry announced that it has signed a five year agreement with Foxconn for the production of mobile phone hardware, as reported by China Business News on December 20. Foxconn can provide the required production scale to help BlackBerry stay focused on corporate software and services. The first smartphone under the deal is codenamed Jakarta, which will run BlackBerry 10 OS and hit the shelves in Indonesia in April 2014, with other Southeast Asian and Latin American countries on the selling list. BlackBerry plans to outsource more design and development tasks to Foxconn in the future, according to the report.
