Sharp to Retool LCD TV Plant for Smartphone IGZO Panels
October 18, 2013

Sharp announced that it will begin manufacturing energy-efficient IGZO (Indium Gallium Zinc Oxide) panels for smartphones at its Kameyama No.2 Plant, originally designed for TV displays in central Japan, by the end of this year, according to Sharp's press release on October 17. Currently, smartphone IGZO panels are only produced at Sharp Nara Plant. By using 8th-generation glass substrates (measuring 2.6 meters by 2.46 meters), the company expects to make hundreds of IGZO panels for smartphones from a single glass sheet and therefore reduce production costs per unit. However, information regarding exact capacity was yet available.
