AU Optronics (AUO) announced collaboration with Corning on the development of 5-inch HD (High Definition) AMOLED (Active-Matrix Organic Light-Emitting Diode) panels for smartphones at the International Touch Panel and Optical Film Exhibition 2013 in Taipei, as reported by Taiwan's Economic Daily News on August 29. AUO's AMOLED panel, which features a 720x1,280 resolution, is based on Corning's Lotus Glass platform due to the thermal and dimensional stability of the glass substrate. Currently, Samsung is the only supplier of AMOLED panels in the world. By cutting into the AMOLED panel market, AUO aims to offer such panels to a broad range of smartphone vendors and increase its profit, according to the report.
