August 12, 2011

Panasonic, Samsung, Sony and XPAND 3D announced on August 9, 2011 that the four companies plan to jointly develop a new technology standard for consumer 3D active glasses, aiming to introduce universal active 3D glasses in the future, according to a Sony press release. As per the agreement, dubbed "Full HD 3D Glasses Initiative", the four companies will cooperate on the development and licensing of RF (Radio Frequency) system 3D active glasses technology. The new technology standard is projected to include various types of IR (Infrared) system protocols between 3D active glasses and 3D displays. The initiative's license is slated to be launched in September 2011, and universal glasses adopting the new protocols are scheduled to hit the market in 2012.
