- China Mobile completed the third phase of PTN (Packet Transmission Network) equipment purchase tender, the Sohu IT News reported on August 4. China Mobile will purchase a total of 130,000 PTN equipment from the qualified suppliers. Following the third phase of purchase tender, China Mobile plans to establish its PTN network in 328 cities across China. In 2009, China Mobile floated the first purchase tender for 40,000 PTN equipment and in 2010, launched the second tender for 150,000 PTN equipment. The combined number of PTN equipment purchased by China Mobile has thus totaled 320,000 units thus far. Currently, China Mobile's PTN network mainly serves TD-SCDMA (Time Division-Synchronous Code Division Multiple Access), 2G, and large-sized customers.
At the same time, Shanghai Mobile, a subsidiary of China Mobile in Shanghai, announced that the company is poised to launch a full-scale 2G network upgrade, with an aim to help the network smoothly migrate to 3G and further to 4G. Of the total 720,000 2G and 3G base stations, 11,000 of which are situated in Shanghai.
- China Unicom recently announced that the company officially launched the second phase of PTN equipment construction in July, establishing networks in 19 provinces such as Jiangsu, Shanghai, Guangdong, and Zhejiang, according to Sohu IT News dated August 4. China Unicom already set up the PTN commercial network in seven major Chinese cities such as Changchun, Ningbo, and Wuhan to support its HSPA+ (Evolved High Speed Packet Access) business.
