September 10, 2010
SMD
(Samsung Mobile Display) plans to invest 2.5 trillion Won (US$ 2.1 billion; US$1=1174.1
Won) in establishing a production facility in Tang Jung, situated in southern
part of Seoul, in a bid to tap surging AM-OLED (Active Matrix Organic Light
Emitting Diode) demand, according to a September 6, 2010 report by the Wall
Street Journal. The plant is slated for operation in July 2011. SMD estimates
that by adding the production capacity of the new plant, the company will be
able to produce 30 million AM-OLED screens each month, up from the current
three million. The company also said that AM-OLED demand will continue to grow,
and devices using AM-OLED screens are expected to reach 700 million units by
2015, according to the same source.
