Toshiba, Sony to Separately Launch Glasses-free 3D TVs
August 27, 2010
Japanese Toshiba announced August 24 that the company is currently developing technology for a glasses-free 3D TV model, the Japan Today News reported on August 25. The new technology is capable of transmitting different images at various angles from the screen, allowing viewers to watch 3D TV content without having to wear 3D glasses. Toshiba confirmed the news but declined to comment on a report in the Yomiuri newspaper that the company will start selling the new 3D TV model by the year-end 2010.

Meanwhile, another TV maker Sony stated that the company also has begun developing the same type of technology for use in 3D TVs. Sony, however, did not reveal any further details regarding the launch date of its glasses-free 3D TV model. Nevertheless, these two companies still have a lot of cost and technological hurdles to overcome before their glasses-free 3D TVs are ready for sale, the Press Association reported on August 26.

All 3D TVs launched by Panasonic and Sony and currently available in the marketplace need special glasses, which have irritated many customers especially regular glasses wearers during long hours of viewing, according again to the Japan Today News.
