3G Development in China August 9-15

Alcatel-Lucent announced on August 11 that the company secured a CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) network upgrading contract from China Telecom through its subsidiary in China, Alcatel-Lucent Shanghai Bell, according to a press release by Alcatel-Lucent on August 11. Pursuant to the agreement, the Alcatel-Lucent Shanghai Bell will upgrade CDMA network for the Chinese operator in 56 cities across nine provinces in China. The construction is slated for completion by year-end 2010. Through the contract, China Telecom will be able to expand the capacity and coverage of its 3G network and tap the rising demand for 3G services, leveraging Alcatel-Lucent's converged RAN (Radio Access Network) solution, which boasts to help reduce energy consumption by up to 24%, according to the same source.
