3G Development in China July 5-11

- The Telecommunication Equipment Certification Center of China's MIIT (Ministry of Industry and Information Technology) revealed that on July 5 it awarded a network access license to Apple for a version of the iPhone operating based on CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) and supporting China's homegrown wireless security standard WAPI (Wireless Authentication and Privacy Infrastructure), the chinabyte.com reported on July 9. This iPhone enables the access to Wi-Fi (Wireless-Fidelity) in China is China Unicom's first WAPI-enabled iPhone. The iPhone distributed by China Unicom since October 2009 in China does not include the Wi-Fi feature.
- Following the launch of around 10 WCDMA (Wideband CDMA) Smartphone models manufactured by Nokia, Sony Ericsson, ZTE, Huawei and Tianyu, with a price tag between 500 RMB (US$73.5; US$1 = 6.8 RMB) and 1,000 RMB (US$147.1), China Unicom recently announced that the company will launch a subsidy scheme, under which the company will provide free calls allowance between 360 RMB (US$52.9) and 1,920 RMB (US$282.4) for users who subscribe to China Unicom's low-priced WCDMA phone/3G mobile service bundles. For example, users who subscribe to China Unicom's bundle plan, with a monthly subscription fee of 126 RMB (US$18.5) can receive up to 1,920 RMB (US$282.4) free calls allowance in total under a two-year contract plan with China Unicom.
