WiMAX Development in Asia July 5-11

Indian state-owned carrier BSNL is slated to
launch its WiMAX broadband service in Chandigarh within two months, adding to
its existing WiMAX service in the major towns and cities of Punjab, according
to a July 8 report by India's Business Standard. Thus far, BSNL has invested
around 700 million Rupees (US$15.0 million; US$1=46.8 Rupees) in its WiMAX
rollout in Punjab and Chandigarh. BSNL expects to cover the entire state of Punjab
with its WiMAX service within the next six months. At present, BSNL has
accumulated a WiMAX subscriber base of some 1,000 in Punjab and plans to boost
the number to 18,000 by the end of the current fiscal year which ends in March
2011.
