June 11, 2010
Corning Taiwan announced on June 10, 2010 that the company plans to relaunch its expansion project for the glass melting furnace factory located in Taichung, according to Commercial Times of Taiwan. The expansion project was previously halted due to the financial turmoil, but glass substrates have been in short supply starting this year, and Corning expects to fulfill market demand with the expansion project.

In other Taiwan panel industry news, AUO said on June 10, 2010 that the company plans to mass produce AMOLED (Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode) mobile phone panels at its 3.5-generation plant, and the company expects to begin shipment at the end of this year, according to Economic Daily News of Taiwan. AUO purchased 100% stake of Singapore-based AFPD, a subsidiary of Toshiba Mobile Display in the first quarter of 2010, according to the same source. AFPD manufactures LTPS LCD (Low Temperature Polysilicon Liquid Crystal Display) panels, and LTPS can be used as substrates for AMOLED.
