Acer Teams Up with E-Book Providers on E-reader Launch

In a press conference held in Beijing on May 27, 2010, Acer unveiled its first e-reader device, LumiRead, according to the Economic Daily News of Taiwan. This six-inch device supports e-books offered by US Barnes & Noble, China's Founder, and Germany's Libri.de. Distribution agreements with French and Italian partners are expected to be formalized soon.

LumiRead has 2GB of storage, which can hold as many as 1,500 e-books, according to Acer. LumiRead is equipped with the microSD card slot, 3G, and Wi-Fi connectivity. The monochrome Acer LumiRead uses the E-link electronic paper technology, similar to Amazon's Kindle, and is expected to hit the market in the third quarter of 2010. The color model is based on Qualcomm ARM processor, similar to iPad, and users can choose operating systems between Windows 7 and Android. The color model is scheduled for release in the fourth quarter this year.
