In a press conference held in Beijing on May 27,
2010, Acer unveiled its first e-reader device, LumiRead, according to the
Economic Daily News of Taiwan. This six-inch device supports e-books offered by
US Barnes & Noble, China's Founder, and Germany's Libri.de. Distribution agreements
with French and Italian partners are expected to be formalized soon.
LumiRead has 2GB of storage, which can hold as
many as 1,500 e-books, according to Acer. LumiRead is equipped with the microSD
card slot, 3G, and Wi-Fi connectivity. The monochrome Acer LumiRead uses the E-link
electronic paper technology, similar to Amazon's Kindle, and is expected to hit
the market in the third quarter of 2010. The color model is based on Qualcomm
ARM processor, similar to iPad, and users can choose operating systems between
Windows 7 and Android. The color model is scheduled for release in the fourth
quarter this year.
