Taiwanese memory manufacturer Macronix
International has bought a 12-inch (300mm) wafer fab from DRAM (Dynamic Random
Access Memory) manufacturer ProMOS Technologies, according to an April 16
report by Taiwan's Central News Agency. It is reported that Macronix spent
NT$8.5 billion (US$271.6 million; US$1=NT$31.3) on the fab located in Hsinchu,
northern Taiwan. Macronix said that the 12-inch wafer fab will be used to
fabricate mainly high-density ROM and NOR flash products. Moreover, the company
projects that the fab will add an extra output of 20,000 12-inch wafers monthly
to its current capacity. 45nm technology node is expected to be deployed at
this fab.
