ZTE to Expand VAS Investment in India

Chinese telecom equipment supplier ZTE recently announced that the company plans to earmark approximately 880 million Rupees (US$19.8 million; US$1 = 44.4 Rupees) for VAS (Value Added Services) for the Indian market, the Sou IT News reported on April 13. ZTE's VAS brand, dubbed the AnyService, provides applications such as localization-based service, mobile newspaper, consumer and enterprise SMS (Short Message Services), as well as voice applications.

 

Meanwhile, ZTE is currently collaborating with Indian telecom operators such as BSNL (Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited), SSTL (Sistema Shyam Teleservices Limited), and Bharti Airtel in Delhi, and Tata Teleservice and Idea in Mumbai to promote VAS. India accounted for one-tenth of ZTE's VAS revenue in 2009, according to the same source. In related news, ZTE recently announced that the company will reduce its Chinese workers based in India to 2%-3%, down from around 13% at present. To date, ZTE has 2,300 workers in India.
