NSN Begins to Manufacture 3G Mobile Equipment in Chennai, India

In anticipation of the growing demand for 3G products following the tender closure, NSN (Nokia Siemens Networks) announced on April 10 that the company has kicked off production for 3G mobile equipment at its existing Chennai plant, making the company the first to manufacture 3G products in India, according to a press release by NSN on April 10. NSN is projected to invest an additional amount of 1.05 billion Rupees (US23.6 million; US$1 = 44.4 Rupees) to manufacture 3G products at its Chennai plant, which is currently supplying 2G equipment to ten telecom operators in India including Bharti Airtel, according to the Sohu IT News on April 12.

 

Initially, NSN will manufacture 3G radio frequency modules and system modules, with an aim to triple the production capacity for these products in the latter half of 2010. Other deliverables include transport modules and next-generation microwave radios, which are slated for production in the second half of 2010, according again to the press release by NSN. Furthermore, NSN stated that the company has set up 3G test labs in India and the training of 3,200 local engineers for 3G services is currently underway.
