April 09, 2010
Apple iPad launched on April 3, 2010, featuring a 9.7-inch touch-sensitive, LED (Light Emitting Diode) backlit display provided by LG Display - the most expensive component in the iPad - and a NAND flash memory, known as the A4, designed by Apple and manufactured by Samsung, the Yonhap News Agency reported on April 5. Aside from LG Display, Samsung and Japan's Epson also are the suppliers of iPad's touchscreen displays, according to the Bloomberg.com on April 7. Other than Samsung, other microchips in the iPad are obtained from other chipmakers, including Broadcom and Texas Instruments. Currently, entry-level iPad, which includes 16GB of memory, is sold at a retail price of US$499, with its component costs accounting for over 50% of its total retail price, according to the Bloomberg.com again.
