- Taiwan's Vee Telecom Multimedia has obtained a
WiMAX service license from the National Communications Commission, Economic
Daily News of Taiwan reported on March 3. Vee Telecom, one of Taiwan's six
WiMAX licensees, plans to launch commercial services simultaneously in Taichung
of central Taiwan and the outlying islands of Kinmen County on April 15 this
year. Vee Telecom expects to deploy over 300 WiMAX base stations in total. Thus
far, Vee Telecom has achieved 70% population coverage in Kinmen. US Clearwire,
one of Vee Telecom's shareholders, provides technology and consultation
services for the company.
- Globe Telecom of the Philippines has allocated
US$500 million capital expenditures for 2010, US$230 million of which will be
used to expand its broadband businesses including WiMAX, according to a March 1
Philippine Star report. Globe Telecom plans to deploy a total of 5,000 base
stations, for both WiMAX and 3G, in 2010.
