LG Display Mulls Purchase of LCD Equipment from Samsung Affiliate Semes
January 31, 2010
LG Display said on January 25 that the company is mulling the purchase of LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) manufacturing equipment from Samsung Electronics affiliate Semes, according to a report by the Chosun Ilbo. However, it is also reported that the deal will not come true immediately as LG Display has already replenished the equipment supply required by its 8G plant in Paju, Gyeonggi Province. Since Korean semiconductor and display manufacturers seldom make cross-purchase from rival companies, LG Display's prospective procurement plan with Semes is seen as an unusual move. Semes is a manufacturer of semiconductor and flat-panel display equipment and has developed 8G LCD manufacturing equipment for S-LCD, a joint venture between Sony and Samsung. Samsung Electronics owns a 63.7% stake in Semes, according to the Chosun Ilbo report.
