TCL Breaks Ground on 8.5G LCD Project in Shenzhen

Chinese LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) TV manufacturer TCL began construction on an 8.5G LCD glass substrate and TV panel plant in Shenzhen on January 16, Sina News reported. A 50-50 joint venture between TCL and Shenchao Technology Investment, the 8.5G LCD project is capitalized at 10 billion RMB (US$1.2 billion; US$1=8.6 RMB) and is estimated to involve a total spending of 24.5 billion RMB (US$2.8 billion). Occupying an area of 600,000 square meters in the Guangming New District, the plant is projected to manufacture 100,000 glass substrates measuring 2200mm?500mm monthly as well as 14 million 26", 32", 46", and 55" LCD TV panels per year upon completion of the two-phase construction. Commencement of trial production is slated for the third quarter of 2011, while mass production is scheduled to begin at year-end 2011.
