- Taiwanese WiMAX licensee Vmax Telecom obtained
the certification for its WiMAX network from the NCC (National Communications
Commission) on December 9, the Chinese-language Commercial Times reported. Vmax
is a joint venture between Tecom, 3G operator Vibo Telecom, Intel Capital, and
TECO Electric & Machinery. Vmax said that the deployment of 250 base
stations in Taipei City is nearing completion, having already surpassed the 70%
population coverage stipulated by the NCC. Vibo also said that pilot service
would start immediately in Taipei City. Initially Vmax plans to recruit 2,200
trial users for free experience with WiMAX-enabled mobile broadband Internet
access.
- UAE carrier Du, in collaboration with US
telecom equipment vendor Motorola, launched on December 7 a mobile WiMAX
network on the Dubai Metro transport system, according to a press release by
Motorola. Leveraging Motorola's mobile connectivity and Wi-Fi backhaul
equipment, the deployment project consisted of network design, installation,
and optimization. Reportedly the first truly mobile WiMAX network in the United
Arab Emirates, Du's WiMAX service is expected to enable wireless Internet
access for subscribers traveling at a top speed of 90km per hour.
