- Indonesian WiMAX carrier PT First Media has
set up four WiMAX base transceiver stations in Jakarta, Depok, Bekasi, and
Bogor, The Jakarta Post reported on November 14. Another one in Tangerang will
become operational soon, too. First Media was one of the eight companies that
won Indonesia's WiMAX operating licenses in August 2009. As per the terms of
the license, First Media is granted the right to provide WiMAX services in Zone
I, which includes North Sumatra and Aceh, and Zone IV and Zone VI, which cover Jakarta,
Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, and Banten. First Media is expected to deploy ten base
transceiver stations in all.
- Malaysia's YTL Communications has signed
collaborative agreements with Telekom Malaysia and Fibrerail in order to
facilitate the rollout of its WiMAX service by 2010, Malaysia Star reported on
November 19. Pursuant to the agreements, YTL Communications will be able to
leverage Telekom Malaysia's core network and Fibrerail's backhaul infrastructure
for its own WiMAX network deployment.
- Malaysia's REDtone International, which has been
providing WiMAX services in Kuching since April 2009, recently said that it
will launch WiMAX services in the cities of Miri and Sibu in 2010, Bernama
reported on November 16. REDtone's WiMAX service is slated to start rolling in
Miri in the first quarter, while the commencement of service is scheduled for
Sibu by the year-end. REDtone has a 2.3GHz WiMAX license for the states of Sarawak
and Sabah. The company expects to invest 20 million Ringgits (US$5.90 million;
US$1=3.39 Ringgits) in its WiMAX project in Sarawak and Sabah. Thus far the
company has made an expenditure of seven million Ringgits (US$2.06 million) on
the project.
