KDDI to Buy 50% Stake in Bangladesh's Internet Service Provider

Japanese telecom operator KDDI announced on November 12 that it will buy a 50% stake in BRAC BD Mail Network, a Bangladeshi ISP (Internet Service Provider) under the brand name of bracNet, the Kyodo News reported on November 12, adding that the value of the deal is estimated at 800 million Yen (US$8.9 million; US$1 = 90.3 Yen). Through the acquisition of bracNet, KDDI aims to exploit the untapped demand for Internet services in Bangladesh, where the Internet penetration rate is relatively low at 2%. Further details of the deal, however, were not yet disclosed.
