- Clearwire International, a subsidiary of
US-based WiMAX carrier Clearwire, and Taiwanese WiMAX carriers Tatung InfoComm
and VMAX Telecom have conducted the first mobile WiMAX global roaming
demonstration, according to Taiwan's Central News Agency on October 27. The
demonstration was carried out at the WiMAX Forum Member Conference held in
Taipei. By means of a USB (Universal Serial Bus) modem and third-party provider
Aicent's WiMAX Roaming eXchange, Clearwire demonstrated access to Tatung's and VMAX's
respective WiMAX networks in Taiwan using a Clearwire account. It is expected
that the realization of international roaming will be able to facilitate the
development of WiMAX from a regional service to international application.
- According to an October 27 report by India's
Business Standard, Google is mulling BWA (Broadband Wireless Access)
opportunities in India and may participate in the upcoming WiMAX auction in
January 2010 via collaboration with an Indian partner. Foreign companies such
as Google will be able to hold up to 74% stake in the telecom venture formed
with a local company. An alternative to said scenario, according to the
Business Standard report, is that Google may be simply a technology partner to
an Indian telecom carrier. Google has not yet commented on the Business
Standard report, though.
