- The STC (SoC Technology Center) under Taiwan's ITRI
(Industrial Technology Research Institute) unveiled on September 3 Taiwan's
first own-developed PID (Personal Internet Device) which simultaneously supports
WiMAX and Google's Android platform, Economic Daily News of Taiwan reported.
The PID developed by STC incorporates the center's own-designed MIMO (Multiple
Input Multiple Output) mobile WiMAX Chip and PAC Duo, an Android-compatible multi-core
multimedia processing platform powered by ARM926 microprocessor.
- A year since the company launched its WiMAX service,
Malaysian WiMAX carrier Packet One Networks announced that its current WiMAX subscriber
base has topped 80,000, according to a report by PC World on August 31.
Nevertheless, the figure falls short of the company's original target of
100,000 subscribers for the first year of commercial operation, as announced in
August 2008. As of now, Packet One's WiMAX network covers nine states of
Malaysia, including Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Johor, Penang, Kedah, Perak,
Pahang, Terengganu, and Negeri Sembilan. The company aims to cover 65%
population by 2012, growing from 30% at present.
