Hon Hai to Acquire 90% Stake in Sony's Mexico LCD TV Plant
September 03, 2009
Japan's Sony announced on September 1 that it has agreed to the sale of 90% stake in its Mexico LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) TV assembly plant to Taiwanese EMS (Electronics Manufacturing Service) provider Hon Hai Precision Industry, Reuters reported. The plant is located in Tijuana City, Baja California and has served as a major manufacturing site of Sony's Bravia-branded LCD TVs for the Americas.

The plant currently hires a staff of 3,300, which will be retained by Hon Hai as the company takes over. The deal is reportedly part of an alliance between Sony and Hon Hai for the production of LCD TVs targeting the Americas. It is understood that Sony will keep the remaining 10% stake in the Tijuana facility and the Japanese company is expected to increase outsourcing of LCD TVs in the future. Financial terms of the deal have not been disclosed.
