Sony to Make Foray into Netbook PC Market in August 2009
July 12, 2009
Treading on the heels of other leading PC makers, Sony announced on July 7 that the company is set to launch its first netbook PC dubbed the Vaio W-series for a price tag of around 60,000 Yen (US$646.6; US$1 = 92.8 Yen) in Japan in August 2009, making its foray into the netbook PC market, Reuters reported on July 7. Aiming to boost its market presence in Japan, Sony Vaio W will be based on Intel's Atom processor and pre-installed with Windows XP OS. Additionally, the W-series netbook PC supports Wi-Fi (Wireless Fidelity) and Bluetooth and has a 10.1-inch widescreen LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) with 1,366x768 resolution, higher than the 1,024x600 resolution that most netbook PCs have. With the introduction of the new netbook PC model, Sony aims to boost overall shipment volume of its Vaio-series notebook PC products to 6.2 million units by March 2010, up from the 5.8 million units in fiscal year 2008, which ran from April 1, 2008 to March 31, 2009, according to the same source.
