June 05, 2009
S-LCD, a joint venture between Samsung and Sony, announced on June 2 that its second 8G LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) panel production line, has started volume production, the Korea Newswire reported on June 2. With a total investment of 1.8 trillion Won (US$1.46 billion; US$1 = 1232.2 Won), the new line located at S-LCD's Tangjeong Complex in Korea will use glass substrates measuring 2,200x2,500 mm to produce panels for use in 32-, 46-, and 52-inch LCD TVs. Panels manufactured at this new site will be shipped to S-LCD's TV brand-name clients, including Samsung and Sony. S-LCD aims to boost this new 8G line's production capacity to 70,000 units per month by year-end 2009, according to the same source. Aside from this new line, S-LCD's 7G line started operation in 2005 and its first 8G line in 2007.
