Via Technologies' 64-bit Nano Chips Adopted in Dell Servers
May 21, 2009
Dell has adopted Taiwanese Via Technologies' 64-bit Nano chips in the company's new XS11-VX8 server product, The New York Times reported on May 15, 2009. Previously codenamed Fortuna, Dell's XS11-VX8 is a specialized system aimed at the website hosting and data center clientele. It is reported that the adoption by Dell is considered a major breakthrough for Via Technologies, which accounts for an estimated share of 1% in the server chip market dominated by Intel and AMD. By leveraging Via Technologies' Nano chips, Dell is able to pack 12 servers in a case with a height of 3.5 inches, and each server is estimated to consume 15 watts to 30 watts, approximately one-tenth the power required by a standard server. Previously, Via Technologies' Nano chips have been used mostly in value-line PC products, such as netbook PCs. Further details as to the scale of the two companies' collaboration, however, were not disclosed.
