Hynix, LG, Samsung, Silicon Image Form SPMT Consortium for New Memory Interface Technology
May 21, 2009
Hynix Semiconductor, LG Electronics, and Samsung
Electronics of Korea have teamed up with US semiconductor design company
Silicon Image to form the SPMT (Serial Port Memory Technology) consortium,
seeking to promote the market adoption of the SPMT specification as an industry
standard, according to a press release by the SPMT consortium on May 18, 2009.
SPMT is a next-generation DRAM (Dynamic Random Access Memory) memory interface technology,
featuring pin count reduction by a minimum of 40% compared with existing DRAM
technologies, flexible bandwidth from 200MBps to 12.6GBps and above, as well as
single or multiple port configurations on a single SPMT-enabled memory chip.
The SPMT consortium is responsible for licensing the specification on a
royalty-free basis. Initially, the SPMT technology is expected to find
application in mobile phones.
