WiMAX Development in Asia April 13-19
April 17, 2009
- Penghu County is expected to lead off WiMAX service in Taiwan on April 27, 2009, Chinese-language Economic Daily News reported. The WiMAX network in Penghu County is deployed and run by Tatung Telecom, which has announced a promotional tariff plan of NT$499 (US$14.7; US$1=NT$33.9) per month with 30-hour gratuitous connection.
Tatung Telecom is the first Taiwanese WiMAX licensee to obtain the operating license from the NCC (National Communications Commission). Other Taiwanese WiMAX licensees granted permission for network construction include Vmax Telecom, Vee Telecom Multimedia, and Far EasTone Telecom.
- BanglaLion Communication, a WiMAX licensee of Bangladesh, has paid license acquisition fee to the BTRC (Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission) before deadline on March 31, 2009, The Daily Star of Bangladesh reported on April 10. By clearing the payment of 2.15 billion Taka (US$31.44 million; US$1=68.38 Taka), BanglaLion is able to continue holding the license. The other Bangladeshi WiMAX licensee having cleared the payment is Augere Wireless Broadband Bangladesh. Therefore, at least two private sector licensees will be able to proceed with their WiMAX endeavors in Bangladesh. BRAC BD Mail Network, originally the third private sector WiMAX licensee, gave up its license on financial concerns. Mango Telecom, which agreed to fill the vacancy left by BRAC BD Mail Network, has not raised enough funds for the license acquisition fee and has appealed for deadline extension.
