WiMAX Development in Asia April 6-12

- Taiwanese WiMAX licensee Global Mobile announced the result of its first-phase WiMAX equipment tender on April 2, awarding Nokia Siemens Networks a base station contract valued at NT$500 million (US$14.80 million; US$1=NT$33.78), Chinese-language Commercial Times reported. Global Mobile expects to start network deployment in May 2009 after obtaining permission for construction and operation from Taiwan's NCC (National Communications Commission). Commercial service is slated for rollout in Hsinchu of northern Taiwan in the third quarter of 2009, initially targeting the business users. Global Mobile also plans to float a tender for WiMAX CPE (Customer Premises Equipment), including data cards and notebook and netbook PCs, before launching its service. Global Mobile has contacted WiMAX CPE manufacturers such as D-Link, ZyXEL, Gemtek, Accton, and CyberTan and notebook PC vendors including Asus and Acer over procurement matters.
- Pakistani WiMAX service provider wi-tribe Pakistan has selected Canadian DragonWave for collaboration on establishing an IP (Internet Protocol) backhaul network in Pakistan, Ottawa Business Journal reported on April 7. Ottawa-headquartered DragonWave is expected to deploy its Horizon Compact radio system in wi-tribe Pakistan's backhaul network, so as to help the company reach its goal of commencing WiMAX services enabling maximum individual links of 400Mbps in 2009. Wi-tribe Pakistan is a joint venture between Qatar Telecom and A.A. Turki Corporate Trading and Contracting, in a proactive partnership with US Clearwire.
