Huawei, ZTE, Ericsson Share Turkish Avea's 3G Contracts

Turkish mobile phone operator Avea announced Ericsson and China's Huawei and ZTE as winners of its 3G mobile infrastructure contracts on April 6, Reuters reported. Avea is a subsidiary owned by fixed line operator Turk Telecom and was awarded a 3G license in December 2008. As per the contracts, Huawei will build Avea's 3G infrastructure in the Mediterranean region and central Anatolia, while ZTE will take charge of the network deployment in east and southeast Anatolia. Ericsson has won a deal to deploy WCDMA (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access)/HSPA (High Speed Packet Access) radio access and packet core networks in western Turkey for Avea. The Ericsson-Avea deal also includes upgrade and expansion of Avea's existing GSM (Global System for Mobile communications) network, according to the Reuters report.
