WiMAX Development in Asia March 30 - April 5

- Following the trial launch of its WiMAX service in January 2009, Packet One Networks of Malaysia recently announced the official rollout of its WiMAX service in Penang, according to a April 2 report by Malaysian National News Agency Bernama. In the next few months, Packet One expects to see more than 50 WiMAX sites in operation in Penang. Thus far, the network deployment progress meets the carrier's schedule to expand its WiMAX service coverage to 35% of Malaysia's overall population by year-end 2009, according to the Bernama report.
- Also in Malaysia, REDtone International plans to inject an investment of up to 20 million Ringgits (US$5.58 million; US$1=3.59 Ringgits) to expand its WiMAX service in Sabah and Sarawak over the next two years, according to a Malaysia Star report. REDtone launched its WiMAX service in Sarawak on April 1, 2009, eight months after the company's WiMAX launch in Sabah. At present there are four operating base stations each in Kota Kinabalu and Kuching, and the company expects there to be 10 base stations in operation by December 2009 in both cities. REDtone's WiMAX service mainly caters to the enterprise sector, and initially the company has targeted 20 enterprise subscribers in Sarawak. REDtone's WiMAX service is bundled with VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol), for a monthly rate of 138 Ringgits (US$38.49) to 1,088 Ringgits (US$303.44).
- Korea's Samsung Electronics unveiled its mobile WiMAX device for US WiMAX carrier Clearwire on March 31 in Las Vegas, Reuters reported. Codenamed Mondi, Samsung's WiMAX device comes in a compact form factor, boasting netbook PC capability with ease of portability. Running on Windows Mobile 6.1 operating system, Mondi is equipped with a 4.3-inch touchscreen display as well as a full QWERTY keypad and navigation toggle. Aside from WiMAX, Mondi also supports Wi-Fi and GPS (Global Positioning System). Other notable features include Bluetooth, a 3MP camera, and 4GB memory.
