- China Mobile has inked a cooperation agreement with China's Jiangxi provincial government, whereby China Mobile will earmark around 20 billion RMB (US$2.93 billion; US$1 = 6.84 RMB) for TD-SCDMA (Time Division-Synchronous Code Division Multiple Access) network deployment in the province over the next five years. The network coverage is expected to initially include the province's 11 cities in 2009, and to expand to the whole province within two years. Furthermore, the evolution from TD-SCDMA to TD-LTE (TD-Long Term Evolution) - a TDD (Time Division Duplex) version of LTE - will be completed by then. The initiative is expected to generate around 30,000 new jobs in the province, according to the same source.

- Beijing Telecom, a subsidiary of China Telecom in Beijing, has launched 3G services based on CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) technology on April 3 as scheduled, the Sohu IT News reported. The service is said to incorporate CDMA 1X, WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network), and CDMA EVDO (Evolution Data Only) networks, enabling users to seamlessly switch among these three networks. The release of CDMA phone numbers and related service packages are expected to kick off soon. To date, Beijing Telecom has deployed around 3,000 EVDO base stations and up to 2,000 WLAN hot spots in Beijing, according to the same source.

- As part of China's telecom restructuring plan, China Telecom has officially taken over China Satcom's mobile services as planned on April 1, 2009, except the latter's satellite communication sector, Xinhua News reported on March 31. The next and last project of China's telecom restructuring process will be the merger between China Mobile and China Tie Tong.
