LG Display, Cree Form Strategic Alliance for LED Chips
February 06, 2009
LG Display recently announced that the company has forged a strategic alliance with Cree, a US-based LED (Light Emitting Diode) maker, whereby the latter will supply LED chips to LG Display for use in LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) backlights, Reuters reported. LG Display had signed a supply agreement with Cree in early January, 2009. Further details regarding the value of the agreement and contract terms were not yet disclosed though.

Pursuant to the agreement, Cree will ensure the stable supply of LED chips to LG Display, according to the same source. Coupled with the provision of related technological support for LED packaging from Cree, LG Display also plans to internalize LED-related technologies. Additionally, LG Display stated that it will increase LED-backlighting panels' share of its total notebook PC LCD throughput to 50%, according to the Korea Times.
