January 22, 2009
Japanese chipmaker Elpida plans to merge with three Taiwanese chipmakers - including ProMOS, Powerchip Semiconductor, and Rexchip Electronics - as part of efforts to revive its chip business, Reuters reported on January 21. Should the merger be completed, these four chipmakers are set to seek financial assistance from the Taiwanese government, according to the same source. On January 12 Taiwan's government had demanded ProMOS to resubmit a reorganization plan jointly proposed with Elpida. Further details of the merger plan were not yet disclosed though.
