Softbank, Renesas, Five Other Firms to Join Symbian Foundation

Japanese Softbank, Renesas, and five other partners planned to join the non-profit Symbian Foundation led by Nokia, Nikkei Electronics Asia reported on November 20. Aside from Softbank and Renesas, other five new members include Borqs, Comarch, HiQ, Kanrikougaku Kenkyusho, and L&T Infotech, and this brings the total number of foundation members to 59.

The Foundation will offer an unified platform - consolidating three Symbian OS middleware solutions - S60, UIQ, and MOAP(S) - for free to all its members by the first half of 2009. Furthermore, the company plans to unveil the platform's source codes in June 2010, according to the same source.
