October 17, 2008
US-based Micron Technology has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Germany-based Qimonda's 35.6% stake in Inotera Memories, a DRAM (Dynamic Random Access Memory) manufacturing venture established by Qimonda and Taiwan's Nanya Technology, Economic Daily News of Taiwan reported on October 14. Micron plans to purchase Qimonda's stake in Inotera in two installments, for a sum of US$400 million in cash.
By acquiring an ownership stake in Inotera, Micro is expected to strengthen its existing partnership with Nanya. Previously Micron and Nanya have established a joint venture named Mei Ya, and the two companies plan to share Inotera's 120,000-unit output of 300mm (12-inch) wafers per month. Furthermore, Micron will authorize Inotera to use its stack DRAM technology in DRAM production.
