Asahi Glass' Fifth LCD Glass Substrate Plant in Taiwan to Start Construction in August
July 18, 2008
Asahi Glass confirmed on July 18 that the company will start construction on its fifth LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) glass substrate plant in Taiwan, Reuters report. However, the Japanese company also refuted previous reports by the Taiwanese media that it will add five more plants in Taiwan as part of the company's long-term development scenario and said that no definite plans had been decided on.

It is further reported that Asahi Glass will invest approximately 20 billion Yen (US$188 million; US$1=106.4 Yen) in the plant. According to Taiwan's Economic Daily News, the plant is expected to manufacture glass substrates for use in 8.5G LCD panels and will be built in the Yunlin Technology Industrial Park, where Asahi Glass' four other Taiwan plants are also located. Construction on the new plant is slated to begin on August 8.
