TSMC Expected to Tap LED Epitaxy Wafer Business via Investment in US BridgeLux

VTAF (VentureTech Alliance Fund), venture capital fund affiliate of Taiwan's TSMC, recently obtained a seat on the Board of Directors of US LED (Light Emitting Diode) epitaxy wafer maker BridgeLux by investing in the company, according to Taiwan's Economic Daily News. VTAF has invested approximately US$40.0 million in BridgeLux, a move seen to demonstrate TSMC's intention to tap the LED epitaxy wafer business.

It is also reported that TSMC has begun preparations to reuse retired MOCVD (Metal Organic Chemical Vapor Deposition) equipment for the manufacturing of LED epitaxy wafers. In addition, TSMC has applied for 1.2 hectares of land in the Jhunan campus of the Hsinchu Science Park. It is believed that the premises will be used as an LED production site, according to Economic Daily News.
