Samsung Acquires Clairvoyante's PenTile IPs, Forms New Company
April 03, 2008
On March 25, 2008, Korea's Samsung Electronics announced the acquisition of US-based Clairvoyante's IPs (Intellectual Properties) for PenTile sub-pixel rendering technology, Nikkei Electronics reported.

The PenTile technology adds a white subpixel into the matrix of red, green, and blue. The unique matrix of PenTile technology reduces the average number of subpixels from three to two per pixel. Displays utilizing this technology are capable of appearing higher in contrast than standard displays or reducing the power consumption by half while maintaining the same brightness.

Samsung will set up a new company Nouvoyance in place of Clairvoyante, which will be dissolved after the transference of IPs. Together with the new company, Samsung will continue to work on the development of PenTile technology.
