Japan to Start Project for Development of Next-Gen. Ultra HD Technology
January 25, 2008
The Yomiuri Shimbun reported in mid-January that the Japanese Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications plans to start a project for the development of next-generation ultra HD (High Definition) technology. According to the newspaper report, the government's goal is to start broadcasting with the new technology by 2015.

Super Hi-Vision will be the name of the new technology, and it will follow the Hi-Vision technology developed by NHK, a public broadcaster in Japan. Super Hi-Vision will feature 33 million pixels, 16 times the amount of Hi-Vision technology.

Although the ministry did not comment, the newspaper reported that the government plans to spend 300 million Yen (US$2.79 million; US$1=107.5 Yen) on initial research for the new technology.
