AUO Plans to Invest US$3 Bln in 8G Plant

Taiwanese AUO announced on November 28 that it will invest approximately US$3 billion in a new 8G plant, which is slated for mass production in the second half of 2009 at the soonest.
The company, however, did not disclose details regarding the new plant's production capacity.
AUO's 8G plant, claimed to the first of its kind in Taiwan, is projected to focus on the production of glass substrates for flat-panel TVs with a display size measuring 50-inch or larger, Taiwan's Economic Daily News reported.
According to the same report, S-LCD, a joint venture between Sony and Samsung, recently revealed a plan to double the monthly capacity of its 8G plant from the current 100,000 to 200,000 units. In addition, the company also declared its plan to construct a new 10G plant. No further details were furnished, though.
