November 16, 2007
Korea's Samsung recently inaugurates its second Indian manufacturing facility in Sriperumbudur, later than the original August schedule reported in a previous Asia Express dated November 16, 2006.

Located at the SIPCOT industrial park, Samsung's Sriperumbudur plant involves a first-phase investment of US$30 million and covers an area of 20 acres. The plant currently operates with a workforce of 350 and has a production capacity of 1.5 million FPD (Flat-Panel Display) and 0.3 million LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) TVs per year. Samsung plans to manufacture 21- and 29-inch FPD TVs as well as 19- to 32-inch LCD models at this plant.

As reported in the earlier Asia Express, Samsung has earmarked US$100 million for this project, to be invested over the next four years. Samsung has been allotted 80 acres overall for its Sriperumbudur plant, which is projected to employ about 2,500 workers in total. Export from this plant to Sri Lanka and Bangladesh is expected to start in 2008.
