STMicroelectronics Adds China's AVS Codec to IP STB Chips

STMicroelectronics has announced to adopt AVS (Audio Video Standard), China's homegrown A/V codec, in its STi520x and STi710x chips for IP (Internet Protocol) STBs (Set-Top Box). STMicroelectronics's STi520x and STi710x chips, based on the company's 90nm process technology and already in volume production, will feature standard-definition AVS1-P2 Jizhun Profile 4.0 level video decoding capability using the chips' multimedia processing engines on a mixed software/hardware architecture. AVS Part 2, the latest version of the codec, has been made the national standard and employed in China Netcom's IPTV trials as well as the CMMB (China Multimedia Mobile Broadcasting) standard.
