Toshiba to Build Power Chip Plant in Japan

According to a recent report by Bloomberg, Toshiba is to invest about 50 billion Yen (US$431 million; US$1=116 Yen) in a new production line to manufacture power microchips for consumer electronics products. The new plant, to be constructed in Nomi, Ishikawa Prefecture, is scheduled to start mass production in the third quarter of 2007. With a maximum capacity of 60,000 200mm wafers per month, the Ishikawa plant will fabricate power chips that control current flows in products such as flat-screen TVs, PCs, and game consoles.
